Swire Properties' sustainable development practices and creative transformation

On 2 September 2022, Richard Hui, Director of Technical Services & Sustainable Development (Chinese Mainland) at Swire Properties, delivered a keynote speech at the 2022 China International Fair for Trade in Services – Beijing Forum on China Building Economy Swire Properties was celebrating its 50th anniversary and had come up with the tagline “ORIGINAL. ALWAYS.”, which refers to innovation.

Hui also introduced Swire Properties' organisational structure and achievements in sustainable development. The Company has been a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index since 2020 and ranked top seventh globally and number one in Asia in 2021. Swire Properties' sustainable development tactics include setting up a smart energy management platform, calculating the amount of carbon emissions and embodied carbon in building materials, and guiding tenants to participate in environmental protection. In terms of green finance, about 40% of Swire Properties' bonds and loans were from green finance as of 31 May 2022. The proportion is expected to reach 50% by 2025 and 80% by 2030.

When talking about community building, Hui remarked that the Company is not just developing a project, but hopes to improve the entire community. Taking Taikoo Li Sanlitun as an example, the entire Sanlitun community was moved eastwards, with the mall becoming the central landmark of the area. Many international brands were introduced to provide high-quality experiences to citizens and shoppers, a number of which were the brand's first stores in Beijing and can only be found there. In May 2022, the Taikoo Li community became a model urban regeneration case.

Stepping into the future, Swire Properties will promote low-carbon development, efficient resource utilisation and digitalisation, as well as enrol tenants into participating in the “Green Performance Pledge” programme and continue to enrich the source of green finance.
