Swire Properties launches full rental waiver to certain tenants, gaining recognition from CE Carrie Lam
Chief Executive Carrie Lam applauded Swire Properties after it announced a series of measures to further support tenants during the fifth wave of the pandemic. It will grant full rental waiver from the onset of the Government mandated closure period until 20 April 2022 for all scheduled premises, such as gyms and hair salons. For F&B tenants, the Company will offer tailored support on a case-by-case basis. Furthermore, various shopping, dining and parking promotional campaigns will continue.
"I am very pleased to see a property company provide support to its affected tenants at its wholly-owned malls, and the degree of assistance is not small," Lam noted on social media. Meanwhile, Financial Secretary Paul Chan also alluded to the Company's effort and called on other developers and big landlords to support SMEs and demonstrate the spirit of mutual understanding and solidarity.
Tim Blackburn, Chief Executive of Swire Properties, said that the Company is giving full support to the Government's anti-pandemic measures to help ride out the fifth wave. In addition to offering some of their premises as quarantine and community isolation facilities, as well as vaccination and testing centres, they are continuing the collaborative approach with their tenant partners during these challenging times.
A local op-ed supported the full rental wavier, seeing it as an example other landlords and developers with economic leeway should follow.
Food columnist Walter Kei noted that it is rare in this day and age to have a compassionate landlord like the Company, and many businesses in the catering sector are switching to takeaway-only, with those who are unable to generate enough revenue choosing to cut their losses expeditiously.
