A media delegation recently paid a visit to ZHANGYUAN on the "High-Quality Development Research Tour". With fashion boutiques and experiential stores attracting many young fashion enthusiasts in the summer, ZHANGYUAN is the first urban regeneration project in Shanghai to implement protective expropriation and historical restoration.

ZHANGYUAN opened to the public upon the completion of its first phase at the end of 2022. The historical preservation of the landmark focused on four key elements: history, documentation, art and modernisation. ZHANGYUAN has been revitalised while retaining all historical buildings, demonstrating that historical and cultural sites can be protected instead of being demolished for large-scale developments. The development's second phase began in 2023, with plans to add 80,000 sqm of underground space and 25 old buildings to be temporarily relocated.
