Green initiatives at Taikoo Hui Guangzhou produce remarkable benefits
Recently, the "Heading to 2060 Carbon Neutrality Goal, A Future Empowered by Green Building Innovation in GBA " summit took place in Guangzhou. The event recognised 24 outstanding projects, including Taikoo Hui Guangzhou. The development's two office towers and mall won three LEED certifications in the recent decade. Richard Hui, Director of Technical Services & Sustainable Development (Chinese Mainland) at Swire Properties, revealed that Taikoo Hui Guangzhou is actively exploring the use of direct current micro-grid technology in collaboration with Shenzhen Institute of Building Research. This initiative follows the successful implementation of the photovoltaic, energy storage, direct current and flexibility systems at Taikoo Li Sanlitun, the first commercial project in Chinese Mainland to adopt such technology.
As the first commercial complex in Guangzhou to use environmentally friendly solar energy, Taikoo Hui Guangzhou generates about 76,000 kWh of clean power every year. It also was pioneering within the Guangdong province to accomplish "net zero carbon" in its annual electricity consumption for landlords and tenants, resulting in a reduction of over 12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Since 2016, Taikoo Hui Guangzhou has undertaken annual bathroom renovations, resulting in a 49% reduction in water consumption each year (equivalent to around 5,000 tonnes). The installation of hand washing and drying machines in every bathroom has allowed a 79% reduction in annual toilet tissue consumption (equivalent to 450,000 pieces of toilet paper). Additionally, the development has established a rooftop vegetable garden on the green belt terrace in 2018. Through continuous efforts in energy conservation and emission reduction, the development has saved 7.26 million kWh of electricity (excluding tenants usage) and 71,600 tonnes of water as of the end of 2022.
